Product Specifications

Additional Information Additional Information
MarShield™ X-Ray Glass is a lead barium type glass of high quality optical grade with over 60 percent heavy metal oxide, including at least 55 percent PbO offering optimum performance. Our leaded glass provides excellent visual clarity while shielding against radiation from equipment in the 100 to 300 kV range. Both surfaces are mirror-polished, resisting abrasives and scratches. MarShield™ high quality lead glass is more than qualified to meet or exceed the high standards of stringent safety regulations established in the medical, scientific, as well as nuclear fields around the world. A continuous, automatic melting/rolling process allows production of lead glass in the industry's largest size, 48″ x 96″ (1219.2 mm x 2438.4 mm).Made of high quality optical grade material, LX-57B offers excellent radiation protection and high light transmittance. Hard, polished surfaces offer greater scratch resistance and superior visual clarity. Unlike other radiation shielding products, LX-57B will not discolor due to radiation exposure. With LX-57B, the choice is CLEAR.
Cleaning Cleaning
Due to the high lead oxide content, on some of our lead glass surfaces they will be more susceptible to scratching and the attack of acids and alkalis. Use only an approved, non-abrasive cleaning agent along with a soft cloth. The glass can be disinfected by using a commercially available disinfectant.
Features And Benefits Features And Benefits
Stock sizes are available from 12" X 12 up to 48" X 96".Resistant to discolouration due to exposure to ultraviolet rays or cleaning chemicals. The durable LX-57B glass retains its appealing visual clarity.Offers excellent light transmission (87.3% with 7mm thick glass).LX-57B is non-combustible and will not emit toxic fumes when being cut. Both surfaces of LX-57B are polished. Using Mohn's hardness scale, LX-57B tests at level 6 (comparable to feldspar, a constituent of granite). LX-57B has excellent scratch resistance because of its hard surface.LX-57B is a lead barium type glass of high quality optical grade with over 60 percent heavy metal oxide, including at least 55 percent PbO.
Installation Installation
Remove any protective plastic wrap prior to installation without sharp objects. When installing, care should be taken that the sealing agents do not contain any acid or alkaline substances (e.g. acetic acid, ammonia). Labels may cause staining on the glass surface by the reaction of the adhesive.Lead glass is extremely fragile compared to normal household glass and therefore should only be cut by an experienced glass cutter.
Note Note
The lead equivalent in mm - Pb, defines the protective effect of the glass compared to a lead wall. Example: A glass with 2.0 mm Pb offers the same protective effect as a 2 mm thick lead wall.
Receiving Receiving
All glass must be thoroughly inspected upon receipt of goods. All discrepancies and/or damages shall be immediately noted and reported in writing to MarShield™ and on the freight bill of lading when received. It is then necessary to immediately notify the carrier's head office of any damages. Please file any claims for freight damages with this carrier within 24 hours. MarShield™ will happily assist however possible, when requested. All materials received shall be properly stored in the original crate in which it is received until such time as the installation.
Relative Thickness Relative Thickness
For the same lead equivalent, acrylic/plastic has to be approximately five times thicker than LX-57B lead glass – significantly reducing observation capabilities. For example, at 1.8mm-2.0 mm Pb, lead glass would be 5/16” thick. Acrylic/plastic would be approximately 1-1/2” thick for the same protection. The extra thickness of acrylic/plastic may require special framing. LX-57B fits standard sized frames.
Resistance To Discoloration Resistance To Discoloration
Acrylic/plastic discolors when exposed to ultraviolet rays. Acrylic/plastic is also susceptible to discoloration from chemicals in everyday use, such as cleaning materials…or even smoke. LX-57B glass suffers no discoloration due to radiation and has a high chemical resistance as well. The durable LX-57B glass retains its appealing visual clarity.
Specifications Abrasive Resistance
LX-57B has greater resistance to scratches because of it’s hard surface. Unlike glass, acrylic/plastic can be easily be scratched in cleaning because of it’s softer surface, reducing its light transmittance and clarity.
Specifications Combustibility
LX-57B is an incombustible material because it’s glass. Acrylic/plastic is combustible. When acrylic/plastic burns, it emits toxic fumes. When acrylic/plastic is cut, it may emit toxic fumes. This does not happen with LX-57B lead glass.

Uses And Applications Uses And Applications
MedicalUsed in the medical field for X-ray observation equipment, electron beam/plasma generators and X-ray TV detectors. LX lead glass protects doctors and staff from X-ray irradiation with no glass discoloration or deterioration in viewing quality. Use of the larger size LX windows facilitates remote control of X-ray equipment.IndustrialLX is used in airport luggage inspection equipment as well as in radiation testing equipment for industrial products.NuclearLX observation windows are used at radioactive storage stations, nuclear fuel development and reprocessing plants, and for applications near nuclear reactors.
